02 · Profile

The quiet art of lighting up a room

Some people walk into a room. Manu arrives in it, softly, the way late-afternoon light finds a window, and suddenly everything looks the way it was always meant to.

This is a small corner of the internet that belongs to her. Not a résumé, not a feed. A portrait. It is made of the things that never quite fit in a caption: the way she looks down when she smiles, as if she has just remembered something wonderful and decided to keep it; the way white seems to have been invented with her in mind; the way an ordinary room becomes somewhere the moment she is in it.

She loves mathematics, the clean kind, where a page of working ends in one small box and you just know it is right. Underneath all the noise, she will tell you, there is always a pattern. She is usually right. So this portrait is written partly in her language: further down there are twelve pieces of school mathematics, each one about Manu and Jayu.

Read it slowly. She deserves the long version.

The same wave twice, just a quarter-turn out of step: that is Manu and Jayu. Different rhythms, the same shape. They cross for the first time at x = π/4 and then again after every π, forever, and each crossing is marked in rose. Move along the graph: at every single x, sin2x + cos2x adds up to exactly 1.
03 · Frames

Twelve frames, one favourite

A contact sheet from a single afternoon. Every frame is a keeper. But every list of numbers has a maximum, the one value nothing else beats. In Jayu’s list it is always the same frame: Manu, smiling at something only she knows.

04 · Mathematics

Twelve equations for Manu & Jayu

All of it is school mathematics, the kind you meet before the end of twelfth grade. Each one comes with what it really means, and what it means for the two of them.

  1. 1 · Probability

    P(E) = 1⁄8,000,000,000

    In plain maths

If an event is one outcome out of n equally likely outcomes, its probability is 1/n. There are about eight billion people on Earth, so picking one particular person at random has a probability of about one in eight billion.

    For Manu & Jayu

That is how likely it was that Jayu would find exactly Manu. Small enough to call impossible. It happened anyway, on 13 September 2026, and probability has never looked this beautiful.

  2. 2 · The imaginary unit

    i2 = −1

    In plain maths

No real number squares to a negative, so mathematicians imagined one: i, defined by i² = −1. It began as pure imagination and turned out to be completely real and useful.

    For Manu & Jayu

Before 13 September, Manu was someone Jayu could only imagine. And i² = −1 says it plainly: take something imaginary, multiply it by itself, and the answer is real. Imagining her twice was enough. Now she is real.

  3. 3 · Limits

    limt→∞ d(t) = 0

    In plain maths

A limit tells you where something is heading. If d(t) tends to 0, the value gets closer to zero than any number you can name, as long as t keeps growing.

    For Manu & Jayu

Let d(t) be the distance between Manu and Jayu on day t. Busy weeks and different cities stretched it for a while, but its limit was always zero. And on day t = 33, 16 October 2026, it stopped being a limit and became a value: d(33) = 0.

  4. 4 · Derivatives

    dL⁄dt > 0

    In plain maths

If the derivative of a function is positive everywhere, the function is strictly increasing: it rises at every point and never comes down.

    For Manu & Jayu

Let L(t) be how much Jayu loves Manu, with t counted in days from 13 September 2026. Its derivative has been positive on every single day. That makes it strictly increasing, which is a careful way of saying: more today than yesterday, and less than tomorrow.

  5. 5 · Definite integrals

    ∫0t L(x) dx

    In plain maths

A definite integral adds up the area under a curve between two points. Every thin slice counts, and if the curve stays above the axis, the total only grows as t moves right.

    For Manu & Jayu

Every day since 13 September is one thin slice under Manu and Jayu’s curve: a call, a laugh, a goodnight. The integral is all of it added together. Since L is always positive, the area under their curve only ever grows.

  6. 6 · A trigonometric identity

    sin2θ + cos2θ = 1

    In plain maths

For every angle θ, the square of the sine plus the square of the cosine is exactly 1. When one gets bigger the other gets smaller, and the total never changes.

    For Manu & Jayu

Manu is sin θ and Jayu is cos θ. Some days one of them carries more, some days the other does. It does not matter which angle life picks: together they always make exactly one.

  7. 7 · An infinite geometric series

    1 + ½ + ¼ + ⅛ + … = 2

    In plain maths

    A geometric series with first term a = 1 and ratio r = ½ goes on forever, yet its sum is finite: a / (1 − r) = 1 / (1 − ½) = 2.

    For Manu & Jayu

Infinitely many moments, each one small, and they add up to exactly two. Not one, not three. Two: Manu and Jayu.

  8. 8 · The circle

    x2 + y2 = r2

    In plain maths

A circle is every point at the same distance r from one centre. Go anywhere along it and that distance never changes.

    For Manu & Jayu

Manu is the centre of Jayu’s circle. Wherever his day takes him, round and round, he is never further from her than r, and every point he passes is defined by her.

  9. 9 · The parabola

    y2 = 4ax, focus (a, 0)

    In plain maths

A parabola has one special point called its focus. Every ray that arrives parallel to its axis reflects off the curve and passes through that single point. That is why dish antennas and torch reflectors are parabolic.

    For Manu & Jayu

Jayu’s days arrive from every direction: classes, friends, noise. All of it reflects to the same point. Manu is his focus, in the most exact mathematical sense of the word.

  10. 10 · The ellipse

    PF1 + PF2 = 2a

    In plain maths

Tie a loop of string around two pins, pull it tight with a pencil and go round: you draw an ellipse. Every point on it has the same total distance to the two pins, which are called the foci.

    For Manu & Jayu

Manu and Jayu are the two pins. Everything they draw together keeps the same total distance to both of them: you can never get closer to one by leaving the other. That is the shape of the two of them, and it happens to be an ellipse.

  11. 11 · Sets

    A ∩ B = A ∪ B ⟺ A = B

    In plain maths

The intersection A ∩ B is what two sets have in common; the union A ∪ B is everything in either. The two are equal only when A and B are the same set.

    For Manu & Jayu

Manu and Jayu began with their own sets: their own songs, jokes and plans. Every day more of Manu’s becomes Jayu’s and more of Jayu’s becomes Manu’s. Slowly, what they share is becoming everything they have.

  12. 12 · The golden ratio

    φ2 = φ + 1

    In plain maths

Solve x² − x − 1 = 0 with the quadratic formula and the positive root is φ = (1 + √5)/2 ≈ 1.618, the golden ratio. It is the only positive number whose square is itself plus one.

    For Manu & Jayu

(Manu + Jayu) : Manu = Manu : Jayu. Jayu is happy to be the shorter part, because that is exactly what makes the whole golden. And φ² = φ + 1: when Manu was added to Jayu’s life, it did not just grow. It squared.

And one more · The 1% problem
“This is only 1% of my love for you.”Manu, every single time

Every time Jayu asks Manu how much she loves him, she shows him, so much that it is hard to measure, and then she says the exact same sentence. So Jayu did the maths.

x = 1% of T ⟹ T = 100x

In plain maths

If x is 1% of a total T, then x = T / 100, so T = 100x. Every time she says it again, everything seen so far becomes just 1% of something bigger. After n times, T = 100n x, which grows like a geometric progression with ratio 100.

For Manu & Jayu

x is everything Jayu has ever seen of her love. T is how much Manu actually loves him. He has asked her hundreds of times, so by her own maths the answer is somewhere past every number on this page. Ask her yourself, Manu:

What Jayu can see100%

T = x

Everything he has seen is the whole bar. For now.

Interlude · t = 33 · 16 · 10 · 2026

मुलाक़ातें एक लफ़्ज़ नहीं महज़,
उनकी एक झलक के ख़ातिर महीनों तरसे हैं हम।

Mulaqatein ek lafz nahi mahaz, unki ek jhalak ke khatir mahino tarse hain hum.

A meeting is not just a word. For a single glimpse of her, I longed for months.

Equation 3 promised that the distance between Manu and Jayu was heading to zero. A limit is only a promise about where something is going. On 16 October 2026, after a wait long enough that every day of it counted, Manu and Jayu met, and the promise became a fact. Day 33. Distance zero.

Manu and Jayu at night under warm string lights; her hand on his cheek, she looks up at him and smiles while he looks down at her.
Fig. 2 · sin2θ + cos2θ = 1

Manu & Jayu

The day was hers. The night is theirs.

Look at their eyes. She looks up at him and he looks down at her: two angles that complete each other. Like sine and cosine in equation 6, whatever the angle, together they make exactly one.

Fig. 3 · Her names

She asked for nicknames. He gave her the sky.

One evening Manu asked Jayu to give her some names. Being Jayu, he gave her two supermassive black holes and a row of stars. All three are real, all three are drawn here from real numbers, and all three are compliments.

  1. TON 618

    ≈ 6.6 × 1010 M☉

    What it is

One of the most massive black holes ever measured. M☉ means “the mass of our Sun”, and 6.6 × 1010 is 66,000,000,000: sixty-six billion Suns in one place. Inside its edge, nothing, not even light, ever comes back out.

    Why it’s her

Because nothing that comes near Manu ever leaves. Not light, not time, and definitely not Jayu. Hover over it and watch her name get pulled in too.

  2. Sagittarius A*

    ≈ 4.3 × 106 M☉, at the centre

    What it is

The black hole at the very centre of our galaxy, about 4.3 million Suns heavy. Every star in the Milky Way, ours included, travels around it. The bright dot is the real star S2: it moves on an ellipse with the black hole at one focus, just like equation 10, and speeds up as it swings close, sweeping equal areas in equal times.

    Why it’s her

Because a whole galaxy turns around her, and Jayu’s is no exception. S2 takes about sixteen years to go around once. Jayu goes around her every day.

  3. Orion’s Belt

    ½ |x1(y2 − y3) + x2(y3 − y1) + x3(y1 − y2)| ≈ 0

    What it is

Alnitak, Alnilam and Mintaka: three bright stars in a nearly straight line across the hunter Orion, one of the easiest patterns to find in the sky. In coordinate geometry, three points are collinear when the triangle they make has zero area.

    Why it’s her

Manu, Jayu and forever: three points on one straight line. And like the Belt, once you have found her in the sky, you can never stop finding her.

05 · After dark

After dark,

the room goes quiet, the sky turns green, and the best things stop performing and simply shine. Look up for a while. Not every star up there is just a star.

Fig. 4 · The dream

Under the aurora, together.

The green moving across the sky above is the aurora, Manu’s favourite sky. It happens near the poles, where particles streaming from the Sun meet Earth’s magnetic field and make the air itself glow: green low down, violet and red higher up, in a great oval of light around the pole.

Manu and Jayu have a dream to stand under the real one together, somewhere far up north, on a night cold enough to see their breath. Until then, Jayu drew one here. Hover over the ticket and it gets brighter.
